Our Story

Our Story

The Carpenters Daughter was founded in 1990 by Caroline Marr with a simple but unwavering belief — that every woman deserves to feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful in what she wears.

At a time when plus-size fashion in New Zealand was almost non-existent, Caroline began creating clothing for women who were being completely overlooked by the industry. Women with curves. Women with real bodies. Women who deserved better options than what was available.

That belief became TCD.

And it still drives everything we do today.

Built From Real Women, Not Industry Standards

From the very beginning, TCD was never about fitting into fashion’s expectations.

It was about reshaping them.

We design for real women — women with shape, softness, strength, and individuality. Women who don’t want to hide, but to feel confident in their own skin.

That philosophy has never changed.

A Moment That Changed Fashion in New Zealand

In 2009, The Carpenters Daughter made New Zealand fashion history.

TCD became the first plus-size label ever invited to show at New Zealand Fashion Week.

At the time, there were no plus-size models in mainstream agencies in New Zealand. So the team held nationwide casting calls and worked with real women — customers, friends, and community members — to walk the runway.

The show went on to receive a standing ovation and sparked national conversation around visibility, representation, and what fashion in New Zealand could and should look like.

It wasn’t just a runway show — it challenged an entire industry mindset.

TCD returned to Fashion Week again in 2010, and the 2009 show is still referenced in discussions about key turning points in New Zealand fashion history.

A Brand Built in Real Life

Today, TCD is still proudly run by a small, hands-on team from our Auckland workroom and flagship store.

Caroline leads design and creative direction, alongside Dihlia Teuru in styling and marketing, and Esther Storey, our pattern maker.

Everything is still designed, developed, and refined in-house — just as it always has been.

Our Community

Over the years, TCD has grown into something bigger than clothing.

It has become a community of women who support each other, show up as themselves, and take up space in a world that hasn’t always encouraged it.

Whether you’ve been with us for decades or just discovered us today — you’re part of that story now.
